The Ultimate Aftercare Guide for Waxing: How to Maintain Smooth Skin
Posted on September 17, 2024

Achieving silky, smooth skin after waxing is only half the battle. The key to maintaining that flawless look lies in how we care for our skin post-waxing. Proper aftercare ensures skin remains irritation-free, smooth, and ready for your next appointment. Whether we’re new to waxing or seasoned pros, these aftercare tips will help us make the most of our waxing sessions and keep our skin feeling its best.

Avoid Touching or Scratching the Waxed Area

After waxing, your skin becomes especially vulnerable to irritation, as the process removes hair directly from the follicle, leaving your pores temporarily open. This sensitivity can cause itchiness, which makes it tempting to touch or scratch the waxed area. However, doing so can introduce bacteria from your hands, increasing the likelihood of irritation, inflammation, or even infection. Scratching can also cause micro-tears in the skin, leading to redness or bumps. It’s best to allow the skin to recover naturally without interference.

If you experience discomfort or itchiness, a cold compress or anti-itch cream (such as one containing hydrocortisone) can help soothe the area. Avoid anything that could rub or irritate the skin, such as tight clothing or friction from movement. In cases of extreme discomfort, you can consult your esthetician for product recommendations that may help alleviate irritation without further stressing the skin.

Wear Loose, Breathable Clothing

In the first 24-48 hours after waxing, your skin will be highly sensitive, and wearing loose, breathable clothing helps it heal more comfortably. Tight clothing, especially in areas like the bikini line, underarms, or legs, can cause friction against the skin, increasing the chance of irritation or ingrown hairs. Tight fabrics can also trap sweat, bacteria, and heat, exacerbating discomfort and raising the risk of post-waxing breakouts.

Opt for loose, cotton fabrics or similarly soft, breathable materials. Cotton allows airflow to the skin, keeping it cool and free of excess moisture. This is particularly important for areas prone to sweating or rubbing, like the bikini area or underarms. Loose clothing is your skin’s best friend in the first few days after waxing, ensuring it remains irritation-free while allowing it to heal naturally.

Avoid Hot Showers and Baths

The heat from a hot shower, bath, or even a sauna can open up your pores further and irritate freshly waxed skin, leading to redness, swelling, or other skin sensitivities. Hot water strips the skin of essential oils and moisture, exacerbating post-wax dryness and increasing the likelihood of irritation. To minimize discomfort, stick to lukewarm or cool water for the first 24 hours after your waxing session.

In addition, avoid hot tubs, steam rooms, and saunas, as these environments can harbor bacteria that could easily enter the open pores and cause infections. Stick to gentle, sulfate-free cleansers to wash the waxed areas, and avoid scrubbing or rubbing the skin too vigorously, which can increase irritation.

Exfoliate Gently (But Wait a Few Days!)

Exfoliation is essential to keeping your skin smooth and preventing ingrown hairs, which are caused by trapped hairs growing back into the skin. However, it’s crucial to wait 2-3 days after your waxing session before exfoliating, allowing your skin time to recover from the wax. Immediate exfoliation post-waxing can irritate already sensitive skin and cause micro-tears or inflammation.

Once the healing period has passed, exfoliate gently using a soft exfoliating mitt, a sugar scrub, or a gentle body brush. Focus on areas prone to ingrown hairs, such as the bikini line, underarms, or legs. Regular exfoliation, about 2-3 times a week, removes dead skin cells that can clog pores and prevent hairs from growing out properly, keeping your skin smooth and free of bumps.

Keep Your Skin Moisturized

Post-wax hydration is key to maintaining smooth, healthy skin. After waxing, your skin can feel dry or tight, and moisturizing helps restore the skin’s natural moisture barrier. Be sure to use a fragrance-free, lightweight moisturizer or oil to avoid irritation, as heavily scented products can further irritate sensitive skin.

Look for moisturizers that contain soothing ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile, or shea butter, as they help calm inflammation and redness while deeply hydrating the skin. Start moisturizing daily, beginning the day after your waxing session. Moisturizing regularly will help prevent flakiness and ensure that your skin remains soft and smooth between waxing appointments.

Avoid Direct Sunlight and Tanning

Waxing removes the outer layer of dead skin cells, leaving your skin more vulnerable to sun damage. For at least 48 hours post-waxing, it’s essential to avoid direct sun exposure, as your skin is more prone to burning, irritation, and discoloration (hyperpigmentation). If you’ve just waxed areas like your face, legs, or bikini line, make sure to stay out of the sun or wear protective clothing.

If sun exposure is unavoidable, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to the waxed areas, but be cautious about using sunscreen immediately after waxing. Wait at least a day before applying any products to the waxed area, as your skin may be too sensitive to handle even mild chemicals.

Skip the Gym for 24-48 Hours

Exercising can cause excessive sweating, which creates a warm, moist environment that can irritate freshly waxed skin. This can clog your pores, leading to breakouts or ingrown hairs, particularly in areas like the bikini line or underarms. Additionally, friction from tight workout clothes can cause unnecessary irritation or chafing.

Allow your skin to heal by avoiding the gym or any strenuous activity that induces sweat for 24-48 hours. This gives your skin time to breathe and recover. Once you’re ready to resume your workouts, choose breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics and be mindful of any areas that still feel sensitive.

Be Gentle With Your Skincare Products

After waxing, your skin is more sensitive, so it’s essential to adjust your skincare routine accordingly. For the first 48 hours, avoid any products containing harsh ingredients, such as alcohol, strong fragrances, or acids like salicylic or glycolic acid. These ingredients can strip your skin of moisture and lead to irritation, redness, or stinging sensations on freshly waxed skin.

Instead, opt for gentle, hydrating products that are designed for sensitive skin. Simple, fragrance-free cleansers and light moisturizers work best in the days following waxing. If you use active ingredients like retinoids or acne treatments in your regular skincare routine, be sure to wait at least two days before reintroducing them to the waxed areas.

Treat Ingrown Hairs Right Away

Ingrown hairs can be a common side effect of waxing, especially in areas where the hair is coarse or curly, such as the bikini line, underarms, or legs. To prevent ingrown hairs, it’s crucial to exfoliate regularly and keep the skin moisturized. However, if an ingrown hair does appear, don’t attempt to pick or squeeze it, as this can lead to scarring or infection.

Instead, gently exfoliate the area to free the trapped hair, and apply a soothing treatment like tea tree oil, witch hazel, or an over-the-counter ingrown hair solution. These treatments help reduce inflammation and encourage the hair to grow out properly. If the ingrown hair persists or becomes painful, consult your esthetician for further advice.

Schedule Regular Waxing Appointments

Consistency is key when it comes to waxing. Hair grows in cycles, and regular waxing every 4-6 weeks helps keep your skin smooth by removing hairs at the optimal growth stage. Over time, you may notice that your hair grows back finer and more sparsely, making future waxing sessions more comfortable and effective.

By sticking to a regular waxing schedule, you also reduce the likelihood of ingrown hairs and ensure that the results of each session last longer. Try not to let too much time pass between appointments, as waiting too long can result in thicker, harder-to-remove hair, which can make the waxing process less comfortable. Regular waxing will leave your skin looking smooth and feeling soft year-round.

Proper aftercare is key to maintaining smooth, healthy skin after your waxing appointment. By following these simple steps, you can minimize irritation, prevent ingrown hairs, and ensure long-lasting results.
